Lagos Foot Bridges
Notwithstanding the construction of safer foot bridges in Lagos by the government of Lagos State towards attaining the mega city status, Lagosians prefer to run across highways—either they are oblivious to the dangers or as one pedestrian put it, “its my life, what does it matter to government how I use it, do they really care, do they know me?
Mr. Tunde Ogbede while reacting to the attitude of Lagosian, traced the problem to the covering of the bridges. According to Tunde “the way the bridges are covered is scaring. People do not feel safe using the bridges because they are not sure of their safety. On top any of the re-constructed bridges, one feels completely cut off, the adverts placed on them completely shield users from seeing and being seen by other road users-with the level of insecurity in the country nobody wants to take a chance.
Checks on some of the bridges on Ikorodu road revealed that there are security men on either end of the bridges. Their duty is to ensure safety of users and to power generators that provides light from 7pm – 6.30am daily.
One of the security officers told GlobalNEWSGATE that the bridges are safe. “We are here to secure users of this bridge. There is nothing to worry about. When it is dark we put on the lights for people to see. The covering is to provide shelter from the sun/rain. People should use the bridges and allow traffic to flow on the high ways, this will reduce go slow on Lagos roads”.
