Again, Senate Berates NPA
Few months after the Senate lamblasted management of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, over high cost of renovations of NPA’s headquarters, marina, Lagos and even as the Managing Director, Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman, is on tour, learning and nothing issues affecting sea port operations, the Senate is unhappy over the abandonment of overtime cargoes worthĀ billions of naira at the Ikorodu Lighter Terminal by the NPA for over 10 years.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, SenatorĀ Hope Uzodinma said the containers were moved there by the NPA to decongest the ApapaĀ Port.
The lawmaker said several containers with valuable items such asĀ transformers, cars and electronics were discovered during the visit.
He expressed disappointment over the non-implementation of the ActĀ establishing the Nigeria Customs Service with regard to disposal ofĀ overtime cargoes.
Uzodinma said, āTo see this number of containers with veryĀ valuable items in our various sea ports and airports, not claimed forĀ a period of over 10Ā years is, to say the least, very disappointing.
āThis shows to some extent a sign of irresponsibility on the side ofĀ the authority. We are going to discuss with the hierarchy of theĀ service.
āWe will ensure that the Act that established the Nigeria CustomsĀ Service, which has also prescribed a procedure for disposal ofĀ overtime goods and seized cargoes, is respected and complied with.
āThe only way to dispose these items or overtime cargo is copiouslyĀ captured in the Act and it is not going to be subjected to any furtherĀ negotiation. Whatever that is defined in the Act is what should beĀ done.
āOur responsibility as the lawmakers who made the law is to ensureĀ that it is followed forthwith.ā
Uzodinma also said with the global price of crude oil fluctuating on aĀ daily basis, it was time the Federal Government considered otherĀ sources of revenue.
