“We shall not relent in our efforts because we cannot allow smugglers to ruin the economy. Local producers and manufacturers must be protected to create jobs and boost exports to earn foreign exchange for this country. I have told dubious importers and smugglers to desist, otherwise they will continue to suffer huge loses”,
The Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Lagos, in continuation of its resolve to bring smugglers and their agents to their knees, seems uncompromising in its avowed commitment to rid the Western Zone of all deceitful importers who think illegitimate trade is a surer way to wealth.
Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Command, Comptroller Mohammed Uba, in what seems another haul of seizures from the unrelenting efforts of officers and men of the Command, disclosed that various contrabands with Duty Paid Value, DPV, of N1.6b have been intercepted by the FOU Zone ‘A’ Anti- Smuggling Squad.
Among the seized items are 64 different makes of vehicles, 22 trailer load of imported parboiled Rice, frozen poultry products, 835 jerry cans of vegetable oil, used clothes, tyres and many more.
The high end cars which were recovered within Omole estate Lagos, Lekki and Ijebu-Od expressway have a combined DPV of N1.3b.
The CAC called on the owners to come forward with proof of ownership and End User certificates for the bullet proof vehicles and claim them at the FOU Command office, Lagos.
Also, seventeen, 20ft containers loaded with wood are under detention at the Command while investigation continues.
Controller Uba disclosed that thus far in the year, a total of N1.7b have been recovered by the FOU Zone A which would have been lost if not for their interventions/vigilance within the zone.
In his word “We shall not relent in our efforts because we cannot allow smugglers to ruin the economy. Local producers and manufacturers must be protected to create jobs and boost exports to earn foreign exchange for this country. I have told dubious importers and smugglers to desist, otherwise they will continue to suffer huge loses”, Uba declared.
