Federal Character Commission in Job Racketeering
There are revelations that the Federal Character Commission, apart from not being compliant with its principles is also short changing Nigerian who look forward to the Federal Government for jobs
Senators were told in Abuja that the 37 Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission, FCC, through job racketeering, were sabotaging the efforts of the commission in trying to balance the federal character structure.
Speaking in Abuja when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs during a budget defense session, Acting Executive Chairman of the FCC, Dr. Shetima Bukar Abba, who exposed the commissioners, said their actions made many of the state governors not to be interested in giving the commission required parcel of land for construction of state offices.
The FCC boss, who admitted the disturbing fact when confronted by members of the committee, said commissioners, who engaged in the act, comprised those far away from the people they represent in the commission.
According to the FCC chairman “After being given available slots of employment got from any of the Ministries , Departments and Agencies, MDAs, for their respective states, the commission expects each of them to take such slots home and distribute evenly among the people there, in collaboration with other stakeholders.
“But the unfortunate reports often received by us is that such slots were not made known to stakeholders in the state, let alone equally distributed, lending credence to existence of act of sabotage within.”
Chairman of the committee, Senator Tijani Yahaya Kaura and members while taking up the FCC boss on the issue, said some of the commissioners were even said to be in the habit of selling high profile job slots given to them for eligible applicants in their various states to people outside their states.
He directed the FCC boss to get prepared to reappear before it with all the state commissioners, with a view to stopping the sabotage within.
