Task Dr. Okonna On further Transformation

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration, Hon. Khadija Waziri-Bukar lbrahim,  has commended Cdre. Duja Emmanuel Effedua (rtd) for leading the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, doggedly with commitment to take it from where he met it to enviable global standards.

Speaking at the 2024 Passing Out Parade of the Academy held Saturday, December 14, 2024, Rt. Hon. Uduak Alphonsus, who represented the House Committee Chair Person said,  from when the Academy started in 1977 to date former Rectors tried their best to develop the Academy.

He however singled out  Pastor Nseyen Ebong and Cdre. Duja Emmanuel Effedua (rtd)  for their contributions to the growth of the Academy.

According to the Lawmaker, “Since MAN was founded in 1977, the administration of Pastor Nseyen Ebong and the immediate past administration led by Cdr Duja Effedua (Rtd) showed capacity and leadership. The last administration turned things around radically and as lawmakers, we took note of the discipline, hard work and commitment they put in”

Commodore Duja Emmanuel Effedua (rtd.), Former Rector, MAN

“Cdre. Duja was very focused, committed and determined to fulfilling his mandate of repositioning the Academy. His efforts are visible to anyone visiting the Academy in recent times”

Speaking on Dr. Kevin Okonna, Hon Uduak Alphonsus said “Dr. Okonna has been part and parcel of this Academy. He was part of the last administration led by Cdre. Duja and he played played his role as a member of that team. It is a good thing that the responsibility of leading the Academy has fallen on him, we are confident that he has the capacity to lead and move the Academy forward”

“I also used to call Okonna a straight shooter, because he goes straight to the point. He addresses issues frontally and he does not mince words in saying it as it is;  luckily, leadership has fallen on his shoulders. It is the belief of the NASS that you will consolidate and surpass the performance of your predecessors.”
“We believe in and support seamless transitions, we shall therefore ensure that we consolidate this transition for the good of the Academy and Nigeria.
On his part, former Rector of the Academy, Pastor Nseyen Ebong congratulated Dr. Okonna on his new role and charged him to stay focused on surmounting the Challenges ahead. He described Okonna as a square peg in a square hole in the management and administration of the Academy; urging to him ensure further advancement of the school.
Expressing displeasure over several management staff of the Academy in Acting positions, Ebong said the situation calls for urgent action by the minister of the Marine and Blue Economy to address what he said is an anomaly for senior staff to work in acting capacity for years.
“The situation of having several top management staff working in acting capacity is not good for the Academy or any institution for that matter; within a year or two of attaining such positions, there is need to confirm them to boost their moral, strengthen them for their work and change the dynamics of work culture in the Academy; how long does one act in any position?, he queried.
The 2024 POP was well attended and management of the Institution hosted guests with sumptuous meals as has become the trade mark and culture of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria to do.
