Maritime Academy On Transition To University-Minister
Unfolds National Blue Economy Policy
Minister of the Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola,CON, thas disclosed that the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, is on transit to becoming a university with the objective of unlocking opportunities in the maritime industry
Speaking at the 2024 Passing Out Parade, POP, of Cadets of the Academy at the school premises in Oron, Akwa Ibom on Saturday, December 14, 2024, Oyetola, who was represented by Mr Babatunde Bombata, Director, Maritime Safety and Security, said “The Ministry, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and the Nigerian Universities Commission, is actively working on the processes required for a seamless transition of the Academy to a University status”
“While this transformation is underway, it is hoped that this upgrade will unlock new opportunities for advanced learning, cutting-edge research, and innovation within the marine and blue economy fields. Realizing this vision, however, requires collective effort. I call on the Academy’s staff, cadets, alumni, and the entire community to rally behind this transformative period. Together, let us approach this process with unity, understanding, and a shared determination to make this dream a reality”
Challenging the graduating Cadets to be innovative and proactive Oyetola added “The marine and blue economy are filled with opportunities, so your contributions to the sector will be instrumental in ensuring a brighter future.
“The government is committed to fostering excellence and innovation in these fields, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact you will make in your careers,” the minister said.
The Minister further disclosed that the Federal Government is working on a national policy on marine and blue economy.
His words “This policy will serve as a strategic framework to drive economic diversification, attract investments, create jobs, and empower our youth and communities. Importantly, it will promote environmental sustainability, ensuring that the resources we rely on today are preserved for future generations”
Also speaking at the 2024 POP, Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, who was represented by the Commissioner for Internal Waterways Safety and Security, Gen. Koko Essien, (Rtd), said the state government would continue to collaborate with the Rcademy to develop the maritime sector.
“I am hopeful that you will utilise the training you have acquired here to further your career as seafarers and in the development of our blue economy,” he said.
The Governor commended the Acting Rector, Dr Kevin Okonna and his management team and charged them to work hard to improve on what exist at the Academy presently.
