As the world acknowledge and celebrate seafarers on June 25 every year, Nigeria takes the opportunity to celebrate her seafarers and maritime professional who work tirelessly to ensure safe voyages across the world.

Maritime agencies in Nigeria, are converging in Port Harcourt to review and strategize on how to better serve and protect seafarers who work on board ships within and outside the country.

Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, Arsenio Dominguez, in his message on the occasion of the 2025 Seafarers Day charged ship owners to do more in protecting and providing for seafarers’

According to him. “Seafarers are the backbone of global trade, yet many face bullying, harassment, and discrimination, with studies showing that over 50% of female seafarers and a significant number of male seafarers have experienced harassment at sea that threaten their safety, mental well-being, and career progression”

“The maritime industry must take decisive action to foster workplaces that are safe, inclusive and harassment-free”

“This year, we are leveraging the voices of seafarer social media influencers, including experienced maritime vloggers, industry advocates, and crew members with significant online followings from around the world to spread awareness directly to seafarers”

Award Winning Nigeria Cadets

“Through video messages and social media engagement, seafarers will hear from their peers about the importance of fostering a harassment-free workplace and how they can take part in this movement. These videos will be widely shared across platforms to ensure maximum reach and engagement” the IMO scribe said

In compliance with and in deference to this charge, Nigerian Maritime Chief Executives, service providers, Trainers and stakeholders who place high premium on Seafarers and the services they provide are meeting and sharing thoughts on improved seafarers welfare and working conditions

Maritime Nigeria joins the world to celebrate and congratulate seafarers on Seafarers Day 2025!
