Tenure Extension, Service Delivery, Expertise, The Goose and Gander

Tenure extension are service delivery

From the private to public service sectoral divide lies a fundamental reward system that predates modern government and societies as they exist today.

In the era of Emperors, Monarchs, Kings and Kingdoms, marrying the Kings daughter was a way of motivating citizens to do great deeds by conquering neighboring kingdoms, sharing the spoils of wars even as  maidens were often on display for brave warriors to select from and take as wife.

With the dawn of civilization, such acts now considered barbaric have been reordered, reconfigured and incentivization   is the buzz word in private/sector workplace in line with  “international best practices” as  “Local Best Practices”  (such as caring/grooming/nurturing every child by community members) gives way to “Don’t eat” “Don’t Touch” “Don’t Accept” “Don’t Associate” etcetera-lets return to the matter at hand.

Tenure extension did not start with neither will it end at the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS.

For the Records:

Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, have had her tenure extended by President Bola Ahmed  to December 31, 2026.

For the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, the announcement across broadcast media was unambiguous; “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an extension of Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap’s tenure as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) till December 31, 2026″; (37yrs cumulative), the Presidency stated.

Surveyor-General of the Federation, Mr.    AbuduGaniyu Adebomehin,    in recognition of his hard work and demonstrated capacity is doing a two year extended service following the tenure extension granted him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“President Bola Tinubu has approved a two-year tenure extension for the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Mr. AbuduGaniyu Adebomehin” A media statement from the state House stated.

“The President expects Mr. Adebomehin to consolidate reforms within the next two years, focusing on national land management and administration, highways and abutting land infrastructure coordination, reclamation and erosion control programmes, and other related matters of strategic national importance”

The Presidency explained that the extension is aimed at consolidating ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s geospatial data systems and national land administration, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga told Nigerians.

On the former Inspector General of Police, IGP,  Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, (the 22nd IGP), he was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2023, he held the position until his resignation in February 2026.

His tenure was extended by three years after the Senate amended the Police Act 2020. Section 18 of the Act, Subsection (8) was amended to read  “(8) Notwithstanding any other provision, every police officer shall serve in the Nigeria Police Force for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.” Egbetokun would have served as IGP till 2027 if he did not resign his appointment.

The Customs CGC

The Presidency has clarified that the six-month tenure extension (till February 2027), for the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Dr. Wale Adeniyi, is to enable him consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service.

“During the transition period, the CGC working with the Customs Service Board, will ensure the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptrollers of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years” the Presidency said

Specifically, the Presidency listed the tasks necessitating the CGC’s tenure extension to include the ongoing modernisation of the NCS, full implementation of the National Single Window Project and the execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol amongst others.

The leadership acumen of Dr. Adeniyi, his innovations in service and his proven capacity to effectively galvanize officers and men of the Service for optimum performance have been attested to by maritime stakeholders.

Understandably, Adeniyi is not alone in repositioning the Service. Several very knowledgeable, well trained officers are working with him as the NCS undergoes change in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu led government.

undoubtedly, for the goose to lay golden eggs, the gander must be gallant, exquisitely fit and productive to fertilize the goose. A sterile gander cannot by any magic or technological implant  could possibly cause golden eggs to pop nor hatch.

Service Delivery and professional expertise are key elements in considering tenure extension for private/public sector office holders-we doubt if anyone ever had his/her tenure extended without delivering on assigned duties.
