Alhaji Bamanga Tukur (1935–2026) A Tribute

The curtains have fallen on an extraordinary era. With the passing of Alhaji Dr. Bamanga Mahmud Tukur, the Tafidan Adamawa and Wakilin Ganye, Nigeria has lost one of its last true pillars of post-independence governance, a legendary industrialist and statesman.

For over six decades, Dr. Tukur navigated the worlds of bureaucracy, governance, international business, and high-stakes party politics with an unmatched brilliance and absolute devotion to national progress. He did not merely watch history unfold; he aggressively built the infrastructure upon which modern Nigeria stands.

Long before he became a political godfather, Dr. Tukur was the master architect of Nigeria’s maritime powerhouse. As General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982, he undertook the monumental task of modernizing our seaports.

Under his visionary guidance, critical infrastructure projects like Tin Can Island Port and the massive expansions at Apapa, Warri, Sapele, and Calabar were actualized—breaking Port congestion and anchoring Nigeria as the indisputable trade hub of West Africa. His international maritime stature was so vast that he broke barriers as the first African Vice President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours.

When the call to direct governance came during the Second Republic, the people of the old Gongola State overwhelmingly elected him as their civilian Governor in 1983. Though that democratic dawn was cut short by military intervention, his foundational strides in agricultural development, rural electrification, and regional synergy laid the blueprint for what is today Adamawa and Taraba States.

He would later bring this deep administrative competence to the federal level, serving with distinction as the Minister for Industries from 1993 to 1995, where he passionately advocated for local value-addition and economic self-reliance.

On the political battlefield, he stood as an apex leader, serving as the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from 2012 to 2014 during one of the most complex eras of our democratic journey. Yet, Dr. Tukur’s vision was never confined to national borders.

He was a passionate pan-Africanist who firmly believed that Africa was a trade partner of equals on the global stage. By founding the Africa Business Roundtable (ABR) and serving as Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, he tirelessly built bridges for regional integration and continental prosperity.

As he returns to his Creator, we do not just mourn a loss; we celebrate a fulfilled, clean, and highly impactful life. Alhaji Bamanga Tukur leaves behind an enduring legacy of leadership, 17 children, and an unblemished example of resilience for future generations.

May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, comfort his family, grant the people of Adamawa State and Nigerian Ports Authority employees serving and retired the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, , and admit the Tafida into Aljannah Firdaus. Amin.
