Port State Control
This is the inspection of foreign ships in national ports to verify that the ships’ condition, equipment and manning comply with international regulations.
While fines and sanctions are regular occurrences in other continents, countries in Africa are often either handicapped or reluctant at carrying our PSC duties at their sea ports.
With a regional training for PSC officers on the New Inspection Regime (NIR) by the International Maritime Organization, IMO, in Lagos Nigeria, it is our hope that PSC will be carried out diligently and professionally to ensure safety and security of ships and crew on our waters.

With a new Director General, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has a responsibility to enforce PSC requirements on ships calling at Nigerian Ports.

Ships that do not comply with standards must be sanctioned accordingly. Fines and or detentions must be applied adequately where necessary.

Good luck NIMASA
